Day 6: Henley on Thames and Oxford

The boat also has 4 incredible crew members who will do what they can to accommodate your every need. Within the crew, you will also have your own private chef who will freshly prepare and cook your delicious food throughout the whole trip until your departure date. This morning's cruise takes us through Runnymede where King John put his seal on the Magna Carta in 1215, from which our vessel takes its name. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066 and lived in for over 900 years by the British Royal Family, the castle boasts unrivaled displays of art, furniture, ancient armor, and royal treasure. Your Tour Guide returns you to Magna Carta for cocktail hour and dinner. Passenger ages tend to range from early 40’s to late 70’s and typically passengers come to find they have common interests and share similar tastes for travel.

Other European Waterways cruise ships

Each day was filled with tours but there was always time to relax on the river and meals watching the Thames roll by were a real treat! Speaking of tours, on each stop our visits were well organized and informative with a comfortable mini-van to get us to many of the sights. Each were wonderful, but the highlights had to be our visits to Highclere Castle (the home of Downton Abbey) and Cliveden House (Lady Astor's country estate). All in all, truly a trip of a lifetime and one we will never forget.

Day 3: Windsor

The UK-flagged vessel is currently owned by Dominic Read and Geoffrey Temple (shipowners) and operated under charter by European Waterways. This England barge’s fine mahogany, teak and oak woods create a charming old-world atmosphere, which is complemented by modern amenities such as under-floor heating. Her large saloon and dining area invite guests to relax among stylish sofas and coffee tables (evocative of period furniture) that sit beside picture windows.

This afternoon, European history comes alive at Windsor Castle, notable for its long association with the English and later British royal family.

This canal boat in England is also an ideal ship for private charter cruises, with theme options such as golf, theater, tennis and family cruises, or customize your own itinerary. This review is a bit late, but the memories of our fantastic barge cruise on Magna Carta with Dominic and his amazing crew still remain with us. Magna Carta is top notch; the cabins are roomy, the beds are comfortable, and the common areas are wonderfully maintained. Dominic has placed time and effort into her and it clearly shows. Magna Carta is perfectly designed for relaxing and seeing the Thames. The crew of KT, Vicki, Oliver, and Dana did a fantastic job - their service was so friendly, by the end of the cruise we truly felt like a part of the family!

This morning we have an exclusive tour of Hampton Court Palace. We take in Henry VIII’s apartments and the Royal Chapel, feel the chill in the haunted gallery and wonder at the Tudor kitchens. Outside, the gardens are breath-taking, with The Great Vine, the oldest in the country still producing grapes and the famous maze. After lunch aboard we cruise through Molesey, Sunbury and Shepperton Locks to our private mooring.

As the courses arrived, Chef Steve gave a quick explanation and description of what he had created for passengers each evening. So much so that we all wished the portions were a little larger. Wines were a lovely Sancerre Domaine Michel Thomas 2008 and a wonderful Trinfo Sauvignon Blanc 2008 from Chile. Laura gave a description of the wine that accompanied lunches, and Chef Steve gave a brief description of the lunch menu. Once we were again securely moored for the evening, Captain Dominic joined us on deck for a Champagne toast accompanied by miniature fish and chips served on newspaper (very British way to eat fish and chips).

Aside from ensuite bathrooms, this canal boat in England is wired for 240 volts with standard UK 3-pin plugs. The full passenger complement of eight are welcome to indulge at the single dining table, with open seating. Mealtimes are casual, complemented by food and wine pairings from the master chef that offer epicurean delights not soon forgotten. Cuisine is focused on traditional British fare, with international favorites as well. Many allergies and special diets such as vegetarian, vegan and no fish may be accommodated with advanced notice. Magna Carta’s typical 6-night/7-day itinerary takes passengers along England’s River Thames from Hampton Court to Henley-on-Thames, or vice versa.

Return to the barge and explore the riverside path with a gentle pedal or leisurely stroll before tonight's delicious dinner. This morning's sightseeing is a visit to the gallery of one of England’s greatest artists, Sir Stanley Spencer. Spencer described Cookham has “heaven on earth” and much of his work was painted in and around the village. A late morning cruise precedes a tour of Peter Freebody’s Boatyard to watch traditional craftsmen work on wooden boats as they have done for generations.
